Justice System Economies Note

A series of strategic interventions and their impact are explored below to demonstrate the use of the Justice Audit by policy / decision makers. The interventions below are either available under law, or enabled by shifts in policy. They demonstrate the impact on the system of small changes. Based on the interventions chosen a ‘Roadmap’ – i.e.: a sequence of selected actions aimed at achieving agreed targets which deliver the requisite overall impact – could be developed. The horizontal view in the diagram below illustrates the key stages of the criminal justice system. The vertical view in the same diagram illustrates the actions and their impact on reducing the flow of cases into the courts and people into the prisons. The reductions are based on a conservative assumption (generally reduce by 10%) – see Data Notes for the assumptions made.
