Calculating reduction in standing prison population in 2016
Total admissions x estimated n days in prison (ie 90) / 365 (ie one year)
1.1 Assume time spent in prison by 5212 admitted does not exceed 30 days. Calculation 5212 x 30 = 156,360 / 365 = 428 = n prisoner places saved in the year
1.2 Assume time spent in prison by 6000 admitted does not exceed 30 days
1.3 Assume time spent in prison by 6500 admitted does not exceed 90 days
1.4 Assume time spent in prison by 15000 admitted does not exceed 90 days
2 Assume time spent in prison by 3866 admitted does not exceed 180 days
3.1 Assume time spent in prison by 15000 admitted does not exceed 90 days
3.2 Assume time spent in prison by 27,185 admitted does not exceed 90 days
3.3 Assume plea of guilty costs 20% of cost of calculated case disposal
4 Assume all courts dispose 75% of cases over 10 years old; and magistrates and metropolitan magistrates dispose 30% of cases over 5 years old.
5.1 Assume:
i) Of CR cases dismissed (20,800), 10% are admitted to prison
ii) time spent in prison by 2080 admitted does not exceed 90 days
5.2 Assume:
i) Of compoundable cases/non GR cases diverted (4691), 10 % admitted to Prison
ii) time spent in prison by 470 admitted does not exceed 30 days
6 Assume:
i) Of cases transferred to VC (4500), 10% are admitted to prison
ii) time spent in prison by 450 admitted does not exceed 30 days
7 Assume
i) 10% convicted prisoners eligible for probation (ie sentenced to less than 2 years (men), all women and young persons in CDCs) sentenced to probation
ii) 30% of 1350 (ie 450) spend 180 days in prison
8 Assume:
i) 10% of 2500 prisoners convicted to more than 10 years in prison released on parole
ii) savings of 10 years for 100 prisoners
iii) savings of 5 years for 150 prisoners
